‘Real-time’ air quality channels: A technology review of emerging environmental alert systems

Poor air quality is a pressing global challenge contributing to adverse health impacts around the world. In past decade, there has been rapid proliferation of information delivered via sensors, apps, websites or other media channels in near real-time and at increasingly localized geographic scales. This paper explores growing emphasis on self-monitoring digital platforms supply informational interventions for reducing pollution exposures improving outcomes individual level. It presents technological case study that characterizes emerging communication mechanisms, ‘AQ channels’, while drawing upon examples throughout literature. The questions are posed: which ‘freely’ available individuals London, UK, when where they accessed? Digital trace data metadata associated with 54 synthesized narratively graphically.
